About the film

This is the promo film for France’s best young actresses and actors, as selected by the Révélations Committee of l’Académe des César.

In 2008 Adèle was nominated for the César du Meilleur Espoir Feminine (Most Promising Actress César) for her performance in Naissance des Pieuvres. Up against her for that award are a few women that we have come to know :
  • Louise Blachère, Adèle’s co-star in Naissance des Pieuvres (2007)
  • Anaïs Demoustier, who we have/will see with Adèle in the short film Pauline (2009), directed by Céline Sciamma. [NoteAnaïs Demoustier won the César for Best Actress in 2020.]
  • Hafsia Herzi, who will star with Adèle in L’Apollonide (2011)
  • Clotilde Hesme, who will star with Adèle in Trois Monde (2012)

As a nominee for this award (one of five nominees) Adèle was one of the Révélations des César for 2008, along with 15 other young actresses and 16 young actors.

About the Révélations des Césars

Each year, the César’s Academy's Governing Board and the Révélations Committee (made up of casting directors working in French film productions) offers a list of a maximum of 16 young actresses ("Révélations des César") to facilitate the voting for the "Most Promising Actress" award (César du Meilleur Espoir Feminine). Since 2007, all young actresses who have worked on French feature-length films or primarily French-language productions are eligible for the list. The Révélations (the selected actresses & actors) are featured in a short film directed by an artist appointed by the Academy each year and a series of photographs are commissioned. The short film is unveiled at a gala dinner that is organised in honour of the Révélations and it is also later screened at select cinemas in France and there is a photographic exhibition.

The evening
The Academy organises  an evening in honor of the Revelations in January each year. This is when the Revelations Project, in a photo exhibition, is unveiled.
During this evening, each Révélation (young actress or actor) is accompanied by an illustrious Godfather or Godmother (sponsor) who they have chosen.

The Revelations
Among the actresses and actors who made the cinema of the year, who are those who will make the cinema of tomorrow?
To facilitate the vote of the members of the Academy, the Revelation Committee chooses each year several young actresses, who appeared to them to be particularly remarkable:
Révélations.
To highlight them, and through them all the young actresses of French cinema, the Academy is organizing
the Révélations Project.”

The Committee
"The Revelation Committee offers, as an indication, and in collaboration with the Academy's Board of Directors, a list of young actresses and actors chosen from among all the performers of French cinematographic production released in theaters in 2007, in order to 'draw the attention of the members of the Academy to these young performers.
This committee is made up of 18 casting directors active in French film production. It is validated each year by the Bureau of the Academy.”

Note 1: Christel Baras was on the Révélations committee in 2008.

Note 2: Also on the committee was Olivier Carbone. This is the casting director who said that Adèle’s career was dead after she walked out on the 2020 César Awards. See this article (https://theplaylist.net/casting-director-says-adele-haenel-has-a-well-deserved-dead-career-after-awards-protest-of-roman-polanski-20200305/) if you want the story of his appalling behaviour. (I think Adèle’s career will continue go from strength to strength and this man has a permanent blemish on his character.)

Note 3: The Revelations dinner in 2020 (a very bad year for the Césars in SO many ways—including the entire board of directors announcing their collective resignation a few weeks before the awards night) was also marred by controversy when some of the ‘god mothers’ (sponsors) chosen by two of the 2020 Révélations actresses were barred from attending:
“it came to light filmmakers Claire Denis and Virginie Despentes had been omitted from the guestlist for its annual Dîner des Révélations event, focused on emerging talent. As part of the initiative, the young guests are invited to nominate an established cinema professional they would like to accompany them to the dinner as their sponsor. Terzian was left red-faced when it emerged he had nixed requests for Denis and Despentes.”

If you've been following things then Virginie Despentes will be familiar to you. As a reminder, Virginie Despentes is a French writer, novelist, and filmmaker, and a major public feminist. Adéle said she has read all of Virginie's  books. She wrote in support of Adèle in a major piece. It is worth reading https://www.liberation.fr/debats/2020/03/01/cesars-desormais-on-se-leve-et-on-se-barre_1780212

A quote from the article (translated from the French):
"The most beautiful image in forty-five years of ceremony - Adèle Haenel when she goes down the stairs to go out and she applauds you and now we know how it works, someone who breaks up and says shit to you."

Note 4: (This is getting so far off topic, but, hey, you might find it interesting as we explore the world of French auteur cinema…)
It was director Claire Denis, controversially banned from the 2020 Revelations Dinner, who was one of the two female presenters that had to announce that Polanski had won the Best Director’s Award at the 2020 César Awards, which prompted Adèle’s magnificent walk out. (If one was cynical one might question the selection of the presenters for that particular award…two women? Coincidence?)

Révélations Dinner 2008

Céline Scimma, Adéle Haenel & Louise Blachère
(I'm guessing Céline was both of their selected sponsor' for the event.)

Hafsia Herzi, who won the award for best new actress in 2008,
and who would star with Adèle in L'Apollonide (2011)

Anaïs Demoustier at the dinner. Anaïs would feature in Pauline (2009),
a film directed by Céline Sciamma with a cameo from Adèle
(In retrospect this film should have come before the Angers Film festival promo film... Pardonez moi—I'm learning stuff as I'm doing this...]
