The Emergence Program
The Emergence program is an awesome program within the French cinema industry to nurture and develop the talents of promising directors, actors, & composers.
The Emergence director’s program
The director is mentored and works with a team of professional actors and technical experts, as well as being mentored by an established director (‘godmother’/‘godfather’/sponsor) to make a snippet of their proposed feature film. They film and edit two scenes from the screenplay that they want to make into a feature film. The snippet (extrait) that is today’s Adèle Haenel Film Festival offering was directed by François Yang. He went on to make the film L’Ame du Tigre (The Soul of the Tiger), from which today’s film was a snippet.

About the Emergence Program
“Élisabeth Depardieu, 20 years ago, had the idea of adapting for France what Robert Redford had created at Sundance: a staging lab for projects of first feature films.
Emergence offers the only residency in Europe centered on filming: the selected directors shoot two scenes from their screenplay with their real actors and their technical teams, in natural settings. This singular and collective adventure, the image of their scenario, allows them to significantly advance their feature film in development.”

Revealing and supporting promising filmmakers, and with them supporting new talents, new generations of screenwriters, composers, actors, technicians, producers, is the heart of Emergence.”
“The directors selected at the Résidence Cinéma are advancing their first feature film project by sharing a singular and unique experience: shooting scenes, surrounding themselves with their technical team, making staging choices, directing the actors, seeing their scenario in images, in pictures. Participating in emergence means turning to learn more about your characters, your script and then continue writing, confirming or reconsidering your intentions, your desires for staging.
In this collective adventure, the young filmmakers interact with their producers, their teams but also among themselves. Each feeds on the work of the other. During the 7 months of residency, the directors benefit from consultations on writing, casting, staging, music, editing, sound editing
.”

and a 'behind the scenes' photo too

We are getting really off track, but there are a number of connections between this film snippet and the television series Les Revenants (2012-2015)
(you read this far, so maybe you are interested in this stuff...)

  • The television series Les Revenants (2012-2015) is based on the 2004 feature film of the same name that was directed by Robin CampilloRobin directed Adèle in 120 Battement Par Minute (2017).
  • Céline Sciamma was one of the writers for an early iteration of the screenplay for Les Revenants (Season One) and she is thanked at the end of each season one episode.
  • Clothile Hesme, Trois Mondes (2011) & Le Rêve de Camille (2014) with Adèle, was in the television seres Les Revenants (2012-2015).
  • Céline Sallette, who was in L'Apollonide (2011) and Un Peuple Son Roi (2017) with Adèle, is also in Les Revenants.
  • Guillaume Marquet, who plays young policeman Alcide in Les Revenants, appeared in the 2010 television film Goldman and also in Un Peuple Son Roi (2017) with Adèle.
  • Guillaume Gouix, who plays Serge Garrell (the serial killer) in Les Revenants,  appeared in Aliyah (2012) with Adèle as Mathias.
  • Frédéric Pierrot, who plays Jérôme Séguret, father of Léna and Camille win the Television series Les Revenants [and Gardet In the Robin Campillo film of the same name] appeared in Les Diables (2002) as the man in the house.
  • Armande Boulanger (Season 2), who is the inquisitive student in Portrait de la Jeune Fille en Feu (2019)
  • Nicolas Wanczycki (Season 2), who is the mean army instructor in Les Combattants (2014).
It is getting a bit tenuous, but what the hell:
  • Jenna Thiam, who plays Léna in Les Revenants, plays the role of Axèle in the feature film L'Indomptée (the film this snippet grew up to be). This is Adèle's role in this snippet.
I think I could create a fabulously complicated diagram of all the interrelationships in the French film and television industry. Then we could play 'Seven Degrees of Adèle Haenel'.
